One of the great khoomii singers of Mongolia, Tserendavaa is one of the last trully nomadic khoomii singers left. His livelihood depends on his cattle, but last winter, one of the harshest in years, he lost most of his animals. Now his nomadic way of life is threatened. This film was made by Mongolian musicologist Badraa in the early 1980's. Featured in the film: Tserendavaa, explaining his different styles of Khöömii. There is also footage of legendary khoomiich Sundui and tsuur master Narantsogt.

This project was created in 2007 . The aim was to reunite 4 of the biggest khoomii singers of Mongolia to perform together. The name, Dorvon Berkh, comes from a traditional ankle bone (shagai) game, the ankle bone has four different sides that symbolize four animals. When four bones are thrown and fall each on a different side, it is called dorvon berkh. This brings good luck and predicts an excellent future. Four different sides, four styles of khoomii: N. Sengedorj, B. Odsuren, D. Tserendavaa, N. Ganzorig.

Types of khoomii

1- Uruulin khoomii --- labial khoomii
2- Tagnain khoomii ---palatal khoomii
3- Bagalzuurin khoomii--- glottal khoomii
4- Khamrin khoomii ---nasal khoomii
5- Tseejnii khondiin khoomii ---chest cavity khoomii
6- Khosmoljin or turlegt khoomii ---khoomii combined with long song (from wikipedia)

Tserendavaa and Tsogtgerel

A couple of years ago I was lucky to catch their performance in Paris, at the time Tsogtgerel was 16 years old and already a very good performer and I had no idea that his father, Tserendavaa, was a well-known khoomii singer. A very nice person too.
