Sons of Taiga
Mongolia is amazing... Human activity, indifference, greed, pollution and climate change are manacing to damage this land and its culture forever...

Nature and environment conservation
A project by The Tributary Fund that aims to protect the taimen fish (the biggest of the salmon family) and a monastery restoration destroyed during the political purges
The following project was something positive, although it was conducted by a coal company, they restored 16 hectares of pasture land (well, it's not that much, but still) and provided a water source in an abandoned coal mine

Mongolia Might Store Foreign Spent Nuclear Fuel? Are you kidding me?
Our govt has been constantly taking short-sighted and ridiculous decisions regarding the environment, especially in the past few years. Without even thinking about the future, our oficials have allowed mining EVERYWHERE (yeah, who cares about the consequences of this very harmful activity on the environment), the hunting of endangered animals (what part of endangered don't they understand?), etc... And now, I come upon this news that the US wants Mongolia to store foreign nuclear waste...! And I am pretty sure the government will agree with this... I don't really know what to do to stop this, so I am just spreading this info... Seriously worrysome news.

Hunting in Mongolia
Photo from www.ruffordsmallgrants.org
I just can't be indifferent to this: the Mongolian government is allowing the hunting of endangered species. This is something beyond my comprehension.... Even such rare animals as snow leopards can be hunted for "research" purposes

Photo from blog.snowleopard.org
UPDATE: "Mongolian Environment and Tourism Minister L. Gansukh canceled the permission to kill four leopards for scientific purpose this year, after meeting researchers and representatives of non-government organizations to discuss the issue.
The researchers opposed the decision made by the cabinet on March 2. They said genetic research and other modern technologies made it possible to do scientific research without killing the highly endangered species."

Khulan
Mongolia has the last sustainable population of the Asiatic Wild Ass or Khulan as it is known locally. But its future is very uncertain since it's being aggressively poached despite the fact that it is an endangered species and it's protected by law. More info: Association Goviin Khulan

The land of the blue skies no more....
Photo from Mongol Environmental Conservation on Facebook
No music today.... I think for the past decade, Mongolia's environment has suffered the most extreme and dramatic changes in history. The explosion of the mining industry, climatic changes, illegal logging, over-grazing, desertification and many other phenomena related to urban development... All this leads to an extinction of many animal species and plants and not only that, but the nomads who once freely roamed the country are disappearing too. So I am not surprised to read articles like this one: Mongolia on the brink of eco-catastrophe . And, please, take a look at these photos of the damage caused by the ninja miners in the Khovsgol region. Imagine if this is happening in a protected area, what is going on in the rest of the country? Extremely sad.....

Mining is NOT Mongolia's future!!!
Because little or almost nothing is done to assess the environmental damage caused by mining companies and not enough measures are taken to protect the land and its inhabitants. Because greed will destroy the pristine rivers and nature that attracts so many visitors to Mongolia. Because of the irresponsibility of the officials that issue mining permits to anyone....
But, thanks to people like Munkhbayar Tsetsegee there is a chance that not everything is lost.
